Rewatching 500 Days of Summer
16 Aug, 2026
I first watched "500 Days of Summer" ten years ago. And then never watched it again. Not because I hate the film, but I just find the lead characters annoying.
Summer's all chaotic. Tom lacks spine. And together, they are a dreamy disaster.
I couldn't understand why on earth Summer doesn't mention to Tom that she was seeing someone. Then, she dances with him. And invites him to the party. WTF?
And there's Tom, who feels intensely for Summer even after she leaves him. Why would you do that, Tom?
These were my thoughts ten years ago when I first watched the movie. Just black or white thoughts.
But last night, I watched it again, and it felt different. I could spot things I missed the first time. I could understand things I ignored back then. I could finally see the grey, and not just black or white.
Summer comes from a broken family. She doesn't believe in "the one" because no one ever showed her it could last. Tom grew up under-confident, so he clings to the first person who makes him feel chosen. And when they met, they were stupid — just like everyone when they are young.
Yes, Summer shouldn't have done that. And yes, Tom should have done that. But did they? No! And that's what the movie is about — imperfect people, bad decisions. Like how reality is.
Ten years ago, I wanted Summer and Tom to be better than they were. Now, I just want them to be real. And they were.
